Last night saw severe thunderstorms lash parts of the Delta districts. Grand Anaicut received 52 mm from overnight rains as Trichy, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam districts received some heavy rains at many places.
Southwest Monsoon Update: As indicated in our post yesterday the Monsoon2015 has started showing signs of withdrawal from Northwest India. The monsoon axis continues to be along the Himalayan foothills with most parts of the country going dry. Rains have been confined to the extreme Northeast and parts of East India which could continue to get rains thanks to an evolving localized vortex. Parts of West coast could receive moderate showers due to lower level moisture incursion. Parts of South Interior Peninsula could get some isolated convective thunderstorms, this could be heavier around the areas of Belgavai / Hubli in North Karnataka & Coastal AP near Vishakapatnam.
To get to Normal Southwest Monsoon needs a daily rainfall of 8.6 cm against the long term average of 5.7 cm for the month of September. In other words 50% excess rainfall during September is needed for Monsoon to be back on track.
Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Last night saw heavy rains lash parts of Delta districts particularly around Karaikal / Nagapattinam region and the areas to the west of it. These rains are expected to continue today as well. South TN could see isolated thunderstorms develop to the west o Madurai. Few places in the West Interior places near Palani / Erode could get some rains from convective activities. Partly cloudy skies during the day over Central TN & South TN with day time temperatures touching around 38°C in a few places. North TN could have clearer skies with temperatures around 37°C in most places. Isolated thunderstorms may be possible over a few places in North Coastal TN late in the night.
Chennai Weather Update: Mostly clear skies with on and off cloudy conditions. Day time temperature may cross 37°C making it a hot and uncomfortable day. Towards late evening / night possible thunderstorms in a few areas to provide relief.
