Southwest Monsoon – Rains to Continue in Peninsular India

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Yesterday saw good rains in the areas near Namakkal, Theni, Tirukoilur and a few places in the Delta region.  North Tamil Nadu saw a fairly dry day except for some rains over Arani / Kanchipuram.  Few coastal areas in Chennai received passing showers early in the morning.

Southwest Monsoon Update:  Southwest Monsoon continues to be pretty much inactive over most parts of the country with only Southern Peninsula and Andaman & Nicobar Islands under the influence of sustained spells of rain. All in all it indicates a potentially quick retreat over the next few days for Southwest Monsoon from North & Central India.

Southern Peninsular India will continue to get good rains today as well thanks to the instability created by an evolving Upper Air Trough over the Bay.   Due to this mid level trough a likely wind convergence could happen over parts of Rayalseema, South Karnataka & Western Tamil Nadu creating a zone of instability.  The areas along the zone of instability stand a good chance of getting heavy rains.

Places near Bangalore, Mysore, Tumkur in Karnataka Kadiri, Madanapallee, Anantapur, Tirupati near AP stand a good chance of rains while over Kerala it is possible for some very heavy rains over Wayanad and adjoining districts of Malappuram & Kozhikode.

Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Thanks to the evolving instability today could see cloudy skies over most parts of Tamil Nadu with temperatures around 2-3 degrees lesser than the last few days.  Towards evening places in Interior Tamil Nadu could get rains with heavy spells expected over the areas near Hosur, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore in the North & Western Tamil Nadu while places around Erode, Karur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Trichy & Dindigul could see some isolated spells of heavy rains.

Chennai Weather Update: Partly cloudy skies with temperatures expected to be around 33°C – 34°C thanks to cloud cover and early sea breeze though high humidity could make it uncomfortable. As things stand the wind directions are not exactly helpful for rains prospects of Chennai though late evening isolated showers may be possible in a few areas.
