Scorching summer like conditions continue to persist across most parts of Tamil Nadu with the day time maximum temperatures staying well above normal in many places of the state. Not often one gets to see the hottest day of the year being recorded towards the fag end of July. Madurai AP recorded not only the hottest day of the year yesterday but also matched the highest temperatures recorded during the month of July. One may remember a couple of days back Cuddalore recorded its highest temperature for July breaking a record set way back in 1895.
If one were to look at the last 3 days average maximum temperatures for the IMD observatories in the plains of Tamil Nadu a majority of the stations have recorded well above normal temperatures. In particular Karur Paramathi, Vellore & Madurai need special mention for recording temperatures which are almost 5 degrees above normal for this time of the year. Both Chennai Observatories have recorded maximum day time temperatures more than 3 degrees above normal indicating how the conditions have been particularly bad since Friday.
Models dont give any major respite for the next few days with similar trend in terms of temperatures expected with possibly the temperatures expected to peak either tomorrow or on Wednesday before seeing some respite. A combination of poor moisture and clear skies have managed to spike up the temperatures drastically. With models expecting Southwest Monsoon to remain weak for the remaining part of July over Kerala it appears the only hope of temperatures reducing is the return of the convective thunderstorms. As of now the probability for the return of convective thunderstorms improves only after 25th / 26th till then we have to brace out this summer like conditions.
