Rainy Republic Day likely in North & Extreme South India

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As India celebrates its 68th Republic Day with great pride two vastly different weather phenomenons are likely to bring in rains to the Northern and Southern parts of the country.  A Western Disturbance that has moved in from Pakistan / Afghanistan is influencing the weather pattern in the North while the Trough of Low that continues to persist in bay is influencing the weather pattern in the South.

In pretty much showing how complex weather is a very strong Western Disturbance that takes origins in the Mediterranean Sea before making a West to East movement all the way until the Indian Sub Continent bringing in Rainfall to the plains and Snow fall to the upper altitudes of the region.

Yesterday saw the Kashmir Valley cut off due to heavy snow fall similarly many parts of both the Punjab provinces (India & Pakistan) & Haryana witnessed rains with hailstorm due to this Western Disturbance.  The rains are likely to continue today as well with National Capital Region likely to be under a spell of rains as the Tricolour is hoisted and the parade that follows with it as part of the Republic Day festivities.

In the Southern Peninsular India, under the influence of the Trough of Low that lies now off the Sri Lankan coast in the Comorin Sea area many parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu is likely to get spells of light to moderate rains with delta districts in line for isolated heavy spells.  There is a likelihood of places in North Coastal TN including Chennai to see some light showers later in the day or around early morning tomorrow.  As the remnant moisture moves across Peninsular India interior Tamil Nadu is also likely to get some light showers in one or two places particularly south of 12N latitude.
