Yesterday saw parts of Chennai witness the first rains from Northeast Monsoon as an intense 30 minute spell lashed the city around 11 in the morning. The IMD observatory in Nungambakkam received 25 mm between 10:30 and 11:00. The airport weather observatory received 13 mm rains yesterday. Areas around Mylapore, Adyar & Kilpauk also received this heavy spell of rains while the COMK weather station in Anna Nagar recorded 6 mm rains with the western suburbs missing out on the rains.
Northeast Monsoon Update: Northeast Monsoon has been fairly active over Coastal TN with places in Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram & Kanyakumari districts receiving good rains. With the low now dissipating the Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation associated with the erstwhile low is now to the Southwest of Sri Lanka which could bring widespread rains over South TN with a few places around Madurai, Virudunagar, Tirunelveli & Rameswaram expected to receive heavy spells of rains.
In a welcome news interior TN around Tiruppur & Coimbatore also could receive spells of rains today while the Delta region around Trichy & Thanjavur could see one or two heavy spells of rains. Coastal TN from Chennai to Nagapattinam could see on and off rains through the day with isolated heavy spells in one or two places. In North TN places around Vellore could see a bit afternoon showers today from the remnant moisture moving in from the coast
Chennai Weather Update: Partly cloudy skies as the day breaks with possible rains moving into the city from the east around 8:00 / 9:00 AM like yesterday. A few areas around the coast could receive heavy spells of rains. On and off rains could continue till about 12 PM. Day time temperature to peak around 30°C.
