Northeast Monsoon set for Overdrive

Weather Update
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Northeast Monsoon continues to maintain its active phase with many pars of Tamil Nadu recording good rains yesterday too. Places along the Western Ghats recorded heavy rains at many locations right from Coimbatore to Kanyakumari district. P N Palayam in Coimbatore dt recorded more than 11 cms as of 5:30 AM today morning.

Chennai has been seeing a fairly good Northeast Monsoon since onset with yesterday also seeing moderate rains lash most parts of the metropolis. As is the pattern during NEM time the rains peaked late in the night which brough 4 & 6 cms to the IMD observatories in Nungambakkam & Meenambakkam respectively.

Satellite images clearly indicate the active phase of Northeast Monsoon with good clouding seen along the East Coast all the way from Central Andhra Pradesh to Sri Lanka. While the Low pressure in Arabian Sea has been churning on its way towards a possible depression & beyond Bay is all set to hosts its own first disturbance of NEM season as well.

The Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation off Sri Lanka is likely to intensify into a possible Low Pressure Area off the coast of Tamil Nadu over the next couple of days. This will bring more momentum to Northeast Monsoon during this week setting it into Overdrive Mode. Wind charts indicate there is likely to be an interplay between the LPA in Arabian Sea & the developing circulation in Bay. This is creating a huge moisture drag over parts of Coastal AP & North Coastal Tamil Nadu. Due to this we are likely to see heavy rains in a few places between Nellore & Marakkanam today.

Similarly Delta districts along with adjoining districts also could see heavy rains in a few places due to wind instability. As one can observe in the wind chart it falls under a zone which is falling between Easterlies and temporary Westerlies created by the Arabian Sea Circulation. Due to this a weak wind zone has formed over Delta & adjoining parts of TN bringing good rains as rain bands make very slow progress from East to West.

Chennai will see another day of intermittent spells of rains during the day which is likely to see an increased intensity later in the evening. One or two places in Chennai & Suburbs cou ld possibly score a century for 24 h ours ending tomorrow morning.
