Northeast Monsoon – Heavy Rains lash Chennai

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Yesterday saw most parts of Chennai receive very heavy spells of rains in the afternoon.  The Automatic Weather Station of IMD in Nungambakkam recorded 51 mm rainfall while airport recorded 10 mm rainfall during the day.  The Northern & Western suburbs of the city bore the brunt of one of the most intense spells of rains received in the city.

Northeast Monsoon Update : A combination of Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation near Comorin Sea and the Easterly Trough that is running all the way from off North TN to Northeast India is recycling a lot of moisture into Southern Peninsula.  This is keeping the Northeast Monsoon very active and is likely to create some very heavy rains in one or two places.

With the wind convergence happening between Northerlies & Southerlies along the Peninsular India to the west of Chennai there is a very good chance of rains in the interior regions of Peninsula.  In particular the Tri Junction of Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu region could see some very heavy rains today.  Many places in the Nilgiris & Valparai region could see almost non stop high intensity rains for a few hours.

The interior regions to the west of Chennai like Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri & Vellore also could see one or two places receiving good rains today.

Chennai Weather Update : Partly cloudy skies to greet Chennai with very pleasant climate.  As the day progresses like yesterday today also could see afternoon rains develop for Chennai with some areas around Avadi & Tiruvallur receiving fairly heavy spells of rains.  Day time temperature could be around 30°C.  All in all it is possibly going to be a near perfect Northeast Monsoon day.
