In what could be called the best day of rains for the year 2017 in North Tamil Nadu rains lashed many places of the state along the East Coast. The rainfall numbers possibly could be mistaken for an onset day of Northeast Monsoon rather than Southwest Monsoon time considering how wide spread the rains have been over Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and parts of Vellore, Tiruvannamalai & Villupuram districts. Not to forget parts of Delta districts which also recorded very good rains as well from late night thunderstorms.
With fairly heavy rainfall day yesterday it is always tricky to estimate the next day’s rains but it appears looking at the wind tracks the wind confluence which has been one of the key constituents of the thunderstorms in the interior places for the last couple of days is estimated by numerical models to move up slightly to the North. Hence the rain bands are also estimated to move slightly to the North towards AP & Telengana.
With remnant clouding remaining and the ground fairly moist on account of most parts of North Tamil Nadu due to overnight rains it may be futile to expect convective thunderstorms to form through the process of rising Air Particles creating necessary instability in the atmosphere. With temperatures expected to be below normal in North TN and rest of the coast the sea breeze front may not develop strongly enough to create its own instability triggering thunderstorms. All in All today we are likely to see a quiet day in Tamil Nadu with some isolated rains possibly in South TN. Enjoy the good weather and let us feel happy in what was the best day of Rains for Chennai after 6 long months of dry weather.
