Monsoon Surge Off Kerala Coast

Southwest Monsoon has started its revival process aided by conducive conditions in the form of a feeble off shore trough and a circulation in Bay of Bengal. This will be a very critical spell of rains for the Cauvery basin.

While parts of Chennai recorded light rains last evening places like Cuddalore recorded heavy thunderstorms that brought nearly 9 centimetres of rainfall. along with Cuddalore places in Villupuram and Delta districts like Punjab Nagapattinam thiruvarur also recorded moderate rains. Manaparai in Tiruchirappalli district recorded 5 centimetres along with adjoining parts of Karur district.

Aided by the offshore trough, the surge in monsoon is just off the coast of North Kerala & South Karnataka. Starting from today the ghats of North Kerala, South Karnataka & parts of Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Though the Rains have been under deficit so far there is an element of flooding risk in this places due to spurt of high intensity rains at times.

With monsoon dynamics picking up there is likely to be a gradual reduction of thunderstorms over Tamil Nadu.
