After a few days of lull in thunderstorms over the leeward areas of Tamil Nadu with rains sticking to the Ghats alone slowly thigs have started to pick up once again from yesterday. Thursday saw quick spell of rains in a few pockets of Chennai & suburbs which was replicated once again yesterday too. But crucially we saw thunderstorms develop over parts of Tiruvannamalai, Villuppuram & Cuddalore districts indicative of improving prospects for Veppasalanam rains over Tamil Nadu. Similarly even parts of Madurai also got some light rains after a dry spell for couple of weeks.
In the meanwhile the low pressure firmly embedded in the monsoon trough & seen over Central India continues to dump heavy rains over parts of Madhya Pradesh & East Rajasthan bringing floods to the region. In a twist of irony one of the Ministers in the Madhya Pradesh Government who was on a visit to see flood damages had to be evacuated himself due to rising waters.
With the low expected to fade away today / tomorrow the monsoon trough will start pushing North towards the foothills of Himayalas bringing a break in monsoon conditions. This is likely to also coincide with an increase in thunderstorm activity too over interior parts of Tamil Nadu particularly districts like Tiruvannamalai which has been seeing fairly subdued rainfall activity for the past couple of weeks.
Today weather models indicate possibly parts of Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Kallakurichi, Villuppuram district to see moderate thunderstorms in a few places as the moisture currently giving good rains since yesterday over the West Coast will migrate across the coast & the day time heating due to clearer skies over Tamil Nadu is likely to create unstable atmospheric conditions to create right environment for thunderstorms to develop later in the evening. Like the past couple of days Chennai & suburbs will once again see light to moderate rains in a few places with sea breeze expected to move in we might see one or two places come under intense spell of rains for a short duration in the evening.
