The last couple of days saw parts of South Tamil Nadu record good rains, particularly Thoothukudi district, under the influence of the remnant moisture from the Deep Depression which pushed in a SW direction from off the coast near Delta Districts towards South Tamil Nadu as an UAC. Thoothukudi Port recorded 10 cms for 24 hours ending yesterday morning while Kayalpattinam recorded 7 cms for 24 hours ending today morning. Similarly yesterday evening also saw thunderstorms over a few places in the Western Ghats as moisture migration triggered these storms while moving across Peninsular India.
Under the influence of the Trough of Easterlies off the West Coast over Arabian Sea & associated wind convergence today once again a few places along the Western Ghats are likely to see late afternoon / evening thunderstorms. Weather models indicate over the next few days mostly dry weather is expected to prevail over Peninsular India which is likely to increase day time temperatures over the interior places, particularly South TN & over west coast. This increased day time temperatures will gradually set the ball rolling for the arrival of Pre Monsoon thunderstorms over the west coast which is the first port of call for Veppasalanam thunderstorms in Peninsular India
Models indicate wind induced instabilities to strengthen from next week which is likely to bring an uptick in conducive conditions for evening thunderstorms to develop after convective development during the day through increased day time temperatures & trigger provided by wind convergence along the Ghats. Once the thunderstorm activity picks up over the Ghats gradually we can see the thunderstorms shift to the interior places along the Eastern slopes of the Ghats as the Easterlies start to weaken.
