Interior Tamil Nadu to see Isolated Rains

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As Southwest Monsoon tries to build momentum to climb up the latitudes interior parts of Peninsular India including Tamil Nadu has been seeing evening thunderstorms light up the skies.   Yesterday saw some intense thunderstorms to the west of Chennai near Tiruttani creating some wonderful evening skies as the thunderstorms provided silhouettes to the setting sun.  Tiruttani recorded about 5 cms from these thunderstorms of which 4 cms happened in an hour.  Similarly parts of Villupuram district around Tindivanam got moderate rains as well.

Afternoon temperature over Tamil Nadu is expected to trend slightly above normal as was the case yesterday.  In particular the North Coastal areas  could see max temp be a degree or two above normal.  Yesterday saw 6 places in Tamil Nadu record above 40°C with Tiruttani touching 43°C before the evening thunderstorms cooled the place.  Similar temperature pattern could be expected today with Meenambakkam in line for possibly another 40°C.  While May possibly sees higher temperatures on a more consistent basis, June is the second hottest month for Chennai and sees 40°C quite often during the first fortnight.  The highest temperature recorded in Nungambakkam during June is 43.3 on 3rd June 1948 while the highest temperature recorded in Meenambakkam is 43.2 on 2nd June 2012 so the trend of near 40 is not exactly unknown.

Interior Tamil Nadu could possibly see another day of thunderstorms today with Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruvallur & Villupuram districts in line for a decent spell of evening thunderstorms.  In all probability we could possibly see the thunderstorms come closer to Chennai compared to the last few days.  One or two models indicate light rains around Chennai suburbs during late afternoon though we need to see if this materializes.
