Heavy rains lashed parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu in the stretch between Pondicherry and Nagappattinam. Preliminary reports indicate the IMD observatory in Pondicherry has recorded 77 mm till 5:30AM today morning while similarly good numbers have been reported from the neighboring IMD observatory at Cuddalore. The rains have mostly stayed south of Chennai with Mahabalipuram possibly the Northern limit of these spells of rains along Coastal Tamil Nadu.
While these rains are going to improve the ground water status through some seepage in the short term many farmers who had managed some cultivation over the last couple of months could see this spell of rains as a hindrance in the harvest process. Only time will tell how these rains have finally influenced the Delta region farmers along with rest of Coastal Tamil Nadu belt.
In the meanwhile coastal Tamil Nadu will continue to receive spells of rains today particularly in the early part of the day with one or two places getting moderate to heavy spells of rains. In the meanwhile as the remnant moisture travels across the coast some parts of Interior areas also could get benefit of these spells of rains though it could be very light and isolated. South Tamil Nadu could possibly slightly better day in terms of rains taking into account the wind pattern.
As things stand chance for rains in Chennai is less though a spell or two of light rains could not be ruled out with some spill over effect of the northern bands of these rains.
