While interior parts of Tamil Nadu has seen some abnormally cool nights Chennai has seen relatively milder winter conditions prevail so far with night time minimum temperatures dipping below 20ºC only twice this season at the IMD observatory in Nungambakkam. Similarly the Airport IMD observatory has dipped below 18ºC only once this year.

Overall dry conditions continue to prevail over most parts of India. Parts of North India is likely to come under the influence of a fairly strong Western Disturbance and an associated mid level westerly trough that is likely to dip up to parts of Central India. This is likely to bring rains to parts of North India and snowfall to the upper reaches of Himalayas.

Down south over the Equatorial Waters a Trough of Low has evolved over the last couple of days. The passage of MJO over Indian Ocean on its way towards Maritime Continent has played a role in this development. Also closer look at weather charts indicate the presence of Kelvin wave as well over the region. Under right conditions this has resulted in the development of strong disturbances in the past. This time though the overall environment remains adverse which could prevent any organized disturbance evolving out of this Trough of Low though some of the models indeed pick up a possible disturbance coming up over the next week.

Weather Models indicate parts of North TN & adjoining interior areas of the state to see a dip in tonight’s time minimum temperatures compared to the past few days. Suburbs of Chennai could see a fairly cold night tonight while the city observatory at Nungambakkam could see a possible sub 20ºC night.
