Rains is a word ChennaiRains is an emotion not only for this blog, Chennai Weather Bloggers but also most of the citizens of this city. This overflowing emotion becomes even better when it is time for Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkaalam, the Northeast Monsoon Season, to make its annual visit. Though its not yet Northeast Monsoon onset the first batch of Easterly driven rains is almost upon us.

The interior parts of Tamil Nadu especially the Kongu belt recorded another good day of rains yesterday too with many places in Coimbatore, Erode districts recording moderate to heavy thunderstorms late in the night. Erode district so far has enjoyed an amazing October with thunderstorms regularly striking the district over the past week to ten days.

This is an indication of how much the Easterlies have strengthened over South India even though Southwest Monsoon has not yet officially withdrawn completely. Southwest Monsoon is expected to withdraw from most parts of the country except Peninsular India in a day or two setting up the stage for the onset of Northeast Monsoon without much delay subsequently.

In the meanwhile Coastal Tamil Nadu is likely to see the first batch of Easterly driven rains starting tonight / tomorrow morning though officially Northeast Monsoon onset is still a few days away. As is always the case while most places along the Coast of Tamil Nadu is likely to receive rains a few places closer to the coast may receive moderate to heavy spells of rains at times. Thunderstorms over the Interior Peninsular India will start to slow down from now on as the Easterlies streamline further. Though today we could see another day of action over West Interior TN & parts of Kerala.
