The pre monsoon thunderstorm season has been chugging along with many parts of Tamil Nadu seeing moderate to intense thunderstorms late in the evening. Dindigul, Salem, Harur, Vaniyambadi all saw high intense thunderstorm action that brought gusty winds along with hailstorms in a few places as well.

The temporarily strengthened westerlies are now pushing almost at the edge of the East Coast with wind charts indicating the Easterlies behaving like off shore winds. If yesterday was an indication the the zone of instability created by the Wind convergence is now possibly over Interior Tamil Nadu as the more intense storms happened east of Western Ghats & along the broken Eastern Ghats.

This zone of wind instability is likely to trigger an active day of thunderstorms over the interior areas. Places to the East of Western Ghats all the way from Kanyakumari to Erode could see thunderstorms . Similarly the broken Eastern Ghats, which meet Western Ghats around the Sathyamangalam area and subsequently spurs in a NE direction, could trigger its own batch of thunderstorms all along from there till South Andhra Pradesh area around Seshachalam hills.

While the usual suspects like Salem, Jawwadhu Hills, Chittoor etc could witness thunderstorms with Westerlies reaching up to the East coast albeit temporarily there is a faint chance for some of the western & northern suburbs of Chennai catching a spell or two of rains today. While the chance for the city are is less don’t be surprised if you hear a clasp of thunder here & there later in the evening. Today & tomorrow represents the best chance for Chennai post which the Westerlies will slowly go back leaving us with Easterlies for comfort.
