Many parts of Tamil Nadu recorded good rains yesterday as the convective thunderstorm season once again picked up in the state. Notable mention has to be Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukottai districts which recorded moderate to heavy thunderstorms in many places during the evening. Later around midnight isolated places in North Tamil Nadu joined the party around Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts along with adjoining parts of Pondicherry.
But the most satisfying development has to be some light to moderate rains in districts like Tiruppur, Erode, Virudhunagar & Dindigul which have been seeing pretty much dry conditions dominate for most part of this Southwest Monsoon season. The TN Agri University weather station at Marakkanam has recorded about 12 cms rain including once spell of 100 mm in an hour between 1 to 2 AM which if true is another case of cloudburst conditions once again like the one happened near Vandavasi on Friday.
Models indicate another good day of rains for many parts of Tamil Nadu today with possibly the Delta districts ideally placed for some moderate to heavy thunderstorms in a few places. Once again today we are likely to see some of the interior places and places in South TN score some good rains.
Going by the the pattern of thunderstorms for the last couple of days we are likely to see a further shift to South of Pondy possibly though North Coastal TN will also get its due share of rains with a more clearer skies expected to the West of Chennai in the interior areas of South AP. With some luck Chennai could manage to catch up some moderate thunderstorms under the effect of Coastal Convergence.
