Like a return of Summer both Chennai observatories crossed 39 degrees yesterday with Chennai Nungambakkam becoming the hottest place in the state after recording 39.6°C in the process also being the hottest place in Tamil Nadu yesterday. In comparison to the normal temperatures for this time of the year the city observatory in Chennai was 4 degrees above normal.
Parts of coastal Tamil Nadu particularly around Kanchipuram and Villupuram districts got some rains with places like Acharapakkam / Cheyyur getting some light rains in the evening bringing respite. But for Chennai and surrounding which saw some light passing showers in a few areas not much respite happened.
The monsoon continues to be weak the feeble offshore trough running from Maharashtra to Kerala coast unable to bring any momentum. We need some synoptic support in the form of a possible low pressure system for monsoon to pick up momentum once again. Models are indicating a possible low pressure to form in Bay of Bengal in the coming days which could be good news.
On the convective thunderstorms front the next day or two things look good for some rains over north Tamil Nadu. With a possible mid level atmospheric circulation getting in place it could possibly create the necessary wind induced instability as well. All in all fair chance for Chennai to get a spell in the next couple of days.
