Southwest Monsoon continues to be active over the West Coast of India with widespread rains over the coastal areas of Kerala, Karnataka & Maharashtra. Monday saw widespread rains at Nilgiris, Tirunelveli & Kanyakumari districts while many parts of Coimbatore also recorded good rains in Tamil Nadu. Valaparai recorded the highest 24 hours rainfall of the season on Monday recording 17 cms. While the reservoir levels are still to pick up from the current monsoon surge it has certainly improved the inflows to major reservoirs in the Cauvery Basin, Papanasam & Nilgiris areas.
Southwest Monsoon has not covered all of Gujarat and has already reached Rajasthan completing the entire Arabian Sea in the process. On the eastern front though it is still lagging with the monsoon stalled near the UP / Bihar border for the last 5 days or so. But things could improve in the coming couple of days as IMD expects Southwest Monsoon to complete its onset journey over most part of the country by end of this week. The capital will witness Monsoon onset possibly around Thursday / Friday with heavy rains expected in the region.
Monsoon will continue to remain active over the West Coast though the heavier spells of rains could shift slightly to the North as the influence of the off shore trough & the Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation off the coast of Gujarat will possibly extend up to Konkan / Karnataka region. Coastal Karnataka along with parts of Konkan region of Maharashtra is likely to see the heaviest monsoon surge. The higher reaches of North Kerala also is likely to witness good rains today along with the adjoining parts of Tamil Nadu in the Western Ghats like Nilgiris & Valparai. Kanyakumari & Tirunelveli districts could see a slight slow down in the rains as things look.
