Under the influence of Cyclone Mora, in Bay of Bengal, Chennai saw relentless heat for the last couple of days. Yesterday once again both the observatories recorded above 41°C with Nungambakkam recording identical maximum of 41.6°C and Meenambakkam recording just 0.1°C lesser than the previous day’s high of 41.8°C. Things though are likely to improve from now on.
In the meanwhile Southwest Monsoon has reached the shores of Indian Sub Continent that is likely to bring a smile to a lot of people in the country. After two successive poor monsoon years an early onset will go a long way in putting away anxious worries. South Kerala up to Kochi Latitude and adjoining parts of South Tamil Nadu have now seen monsoon make an onset along with parts of Northeastern States. The key role played by Cyclone Mora in dragging the monsoon current over Indian Mainland cannot be underestimated in this regard.
With Cyclone Mora making landfall over the Chittagong region of Bangladesh the Westerlies are expected to ease their stranglehold allowing for some respite over North Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai. Unlike the past couple of days we could possibly see the sea breeze make an impact around early afternoon possibly keeping the temperatures marginally lower than the last two days. While in all probability the southern suburbs like Meenambakkam could once again touch 40°C the city area could possibly settle at around 39°C.
On the rain front under prevailing Monsoon conditions parts of Kanyakumari district and one or two places in Tirunelveli district near the ghats could get some spells of light to moderate rains.
