Hot conditions continued to grip most parts of Tamil Nadu as 9 places recorded 40°C or above while 6 places recorded 41°C and above with K.Paramathy topping the charts at 42.2°C. Coimbatore airport recorded its hottest day of 2017 setting 39°C in the process.
While Chennai city observatory at Nungambakkam has been helped by the sea breeze Meenambakkam has seen no such luck as yesterday was another day when the Airport observatory crossed 100°F.
The overall trend of Easterly Wind Regime continuing despite the formation of “Cyclone Maarutha” during middle of April has been the saving grace so far this summer with temperatures not spiking drastically under the influence of Westerly land based winds while sea breeze struggled to compete against the onslaught of the strengthening westerly winds due to seasonal change.
Things are expected to be similar today as well with hot conditions likely to persist over most parts of Tamil Nadu while the coastal areas can expect some respite in the afternoon through the arrival of the sea breeze. Interior places like Vellore, Tiruttani, Trichy, Madurai, Karur etc will possibly see temperatures settle around day time high of 41 degrees Coimbatore is likely to see another hot day with temperatures hovering around 39 / 40°C making it a very uncomfortable day.
On the rain front for Tamil Nadu nothing major is on the cards except for the places along the Western Ghats and few isolated places in Tirunelveli / Kanyakumari district which could benefit from late evening thunderstorms under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area.
Overall the rain bands are likely to be more in the South Interior Karnataka region and parts of Andhra Pradesh. With a trough running from North Telengana along the interior areas of AP & Karnataka these places are well placed for the late evening thunderstorms triggered by another upper air cyclonic circulation persisting over the interior areas of Karnataka. One or two places in South Karnataka along the Chickamagalur, Hassan & Madikeri area could get heavy spells of rains.
