In what could be a major relief to Chennai Rains are expected to take a much needed break today after they mayhem that happened last evening & late night. In what is a recurring event high intensity rainfall lashing the city for short duration time last evening say the Automatic Weather Station at Anna University record 7 cm in one hour between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
The IMD AWS in Nungambakkam has recorded 9 cm rain till about 6:30 in the morning while four places around Chennai, Taramani, Anna University, Kolapakkam & Avadi have recorded more than 10 cm rains according to the AWS udpates from IMD.
The extreme intense rainfall was a combination of the moisture drag due to the Trough of Low moving into Arabian Sea and what was already a combustive environment thanks to the remnant moisture along the coast of North Tamil Nadu from the last couple of days of trough activity. Though the steering winds were expected to move the thunderstorms at a fair clip due to the heavy moisture content the movement of thunderstorms dragged on slowly resulting in deluge at many places.
Chennai Rains Update: The rains are expected to ease for Chennai over the next couple of days. Today could be cloudy skies with occasional isolated light rains in one or places but overall the rains are expected to take a break for the next few days before picking up once again under the influence of an evolving disturbance in the bay.
Rest of Rainfall Update: Early morning rains around the coastal region of Pondy to Nagappattinam should give away to a clear day. As the day progresses the rains are expected to happen in the interior places of Tamil Nadu with places around Trichy, Madurai & Coimbatore possibly getting some isolated rains.
