Yesterday saw a very quiet day for Tamil Nadu with very little thunderstorm activity seen across the plains of the state except for some isolated places closer to the Eastern Ghats. Similar conditions are likely to persist for the next few days as Peninsular India may be seeing subdued rains even along the south west coast & the Southern Ghats of Kerala & Tamil Nadu.
The Cauvery basin saw moderate rains yesterday in the Coorg & Wayanad areas which could bring some decent inflows from the catchment areas. But one needs to keep in mind the fairly long subdued spell in August could have reduced the overall soil moisture levels. This means while a similar spell like last couple of days over the Cauvery basin could have brought between 4 to 6 TMC inflows during July may not necessarily bring similar inflows now. Nevertheless we are at a stage with about 3 weeks of Monsoon season left every TMC made available will become vital.
With the rain bands shifting slightly North compared to yesterday parts of North Konkan & Gujarat may see heavy to very heavy rains while southern parts of Peninsular India will not only see a reduction in rains along the SW coast & adjoining Western Ghats but also an increase in day time temperatures over most parts of Tamil Nadu due to the overall dryness in atmospheric conditions. Thunderstorms meanwhile will be restricted to extremely isolated places depending on any local support.
