A few areas North of Chennai and areas around Poonamallee saw rains last evening while the city did not receive much except passing drizzle in one or two places
The vortex developed by the Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation over Gujarat gave heavy rains to the North Konkan region with many places in Thane district getting rains in excess of 200 mm, just a hundred km or so south places like Murud, Alibaug received not even 10 mm rains from the same period.
With the Monsoon trough now moving firmly to its southernmost position in the last month or so the rains are set to stay over Central India & West Coast with very heavy spells expected over many places around the weekend.
South Peninsular India will have to wait for the extreme active phase of monsoon to slow down over Central India so that the moisture incursion gets better for widespread heavy rainfall over Karnataka & Kerala till then the heavy rains will be restricted to the coastal region.
Chennai Weather Update: Chennai to have a warm day with temperature around 37°C. Sea breeze to set in around 2 PM. There is a possibility of late night thunderstorms developing over North Coastal Tamil Nadu around Chennai which could give rains to a few areas of Chennai.
