April does not see wide spread rainfall activity over Peninsular India regularly. A combination of factors spearheaded by an incoming Western Disturbance that is expected to dip down south all the way to little south of Chennai latitude will start a spell of rainy days at many places from the weekend till possibly middle of next week.
Starting from may be Saturday as the Western Disturbance dips down it starts to push in moisture and rainfall over Peninsular India especially over Interior Karnataka and Telengana regions along with parts of Vidharbha. On Sunday the Western Disturbance is seen dipping even further deep into the Southern Peninsula creating thunderstorms along the trough line right through the Interior place starting from Tamil Nadu all the way upto Odisha. This is partly aided by the presence of a marginal western depression over Central India pulling in the moisture from the Bay.
As the weekend turns over into a new week the action starts to shift from West to the East. It is not often one sees rainfall influenced by both Westerlies and Easterlies happen over Southern Peninsula. Lower level easterlies that has been providing rains to south Tamil Nadu is expected to strengthen over the weekend and possibly push further north in latitude thereby providing rainfall opportunities to coastal Tamil Nadu all the way.
Will Chennai’s long wait for rains end during the above events? Our firm belief is a strong Yes. Chennai could get lucky this time with rains from both Westerlies and Easterlies. Though there is many a time a slip between the cup and the lip we think this time is our time. Between Sunday and Thursday next it would be indeed a curse if Chennai does get its due share of rains.
