While Chennai possibly goes through its umpteenth rain break for this season its a good time to run a quick status check of the Northeast Monsoon 2014 for Tamil Nadu. This summary is as of 10th December, we will update by the weekend the status as of 17th December once IMD puts the data out.
Some of the salient features of the Northeast Monsoon 2014 so far are as follows:
- Tamil Nadu as a whole is about 7% lower than normal average
- Only 11 districts are in the positive as far as rains received for this season
- 23 Districts have received lesser than average rainfall so far
- Tiruchirapalli, Ariyalur, Kancheepuram, Vellore & Thiruvannamalai are facing a deficit of more than 30%, It is unlikely these districts would come to normal category this Northeast Monsoon
- Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi have received excess rains by more than 40% a pretty much rare occurrence which may not repeat soon in the near future
- By the week ending 17th data comes through in all probability Chennai would end up having deficit in excess of 20%
With the rains going to favour South TN more in the days to come it will be a case of தெற்கு வாழ்கிறது, வடக்கு தேய்கிறது, North Tamil Nadu could face a severe crisis in terms of deficit monsoon. The spatial rainfall map of Tamil Nadu pretty much sums up the unique pattern of rains this Northeast Monsoon has provided to Tamil Nadu
